The first patent for an electric blender appeared in 1885 (the patent also stated that the blender could be powered by mechanical means).   Between that first patent and the early 1920s, a number of other blending devices were introduced, but these were usually only used in soda fountains to make milk shakes and malts.  These early blenders were designed similar to modern milk shake makers with a drop down blade on a shaft.

In the early 1920s, Stephen Poplawski invented a blender with a spinning blade at the bottom of the container, similar to the blenders that are sold today.  His invention (along with the rest of his company) was sold to Oster Manufacturing which later produced the classic retro “Osterizer” blenders.  These early blenders were available for both commercial and home use, and although a bit archaic, would be easily recognizable as a blender in today’s kitchen.

In the mid 1930s the iconic “Waring” blender was developed (officially called the Miracle Mixer) by Waring Products.  The Vita-Mix blender was introduced in the late 1940s, and through an effective ad campaign, blenders became a standard kitchen appliance.  Blenders from this period to the 1970s are generally considered “retro blenders” by many, but almost any table top blender could fall into that category.

Throughout this period blenders usually had a shiny metal base, or quite often a green or blue base, with a glass container.  Early models only had one or two speed settings, while later models often had a few more.  Generally, blenders from the “retro” period were simple, well made and functional.

Refurbished retro blenders can be found for reasonable prices on eBay or other sites.  A number of companies also produce retro style blenders.  These are often a good choice as they are new (blenders, having moving parts, can wear out faster than vintage toasters) and often cost less.
